Case study / Cloud migration

From vCenter to the cloud, with purpose.

A production data centre migration to Azure and IONOS, with attention to continuity, sizing, and ongoing cost.

Professional work · anonymised~20% lower IONOS costs through optimisation
01

The problem

Move production workloads from a VMware-based data centre into a hybrid-cloud environment while maintaining reliable operations and controlling cost.

02

My responsibility

I co-led a production migration from VMware vCenter to Azure and IONOS and continued migration work with the operations team.

03

The decisions

Combine migration work with infrastructure automation and ongoing resource optimisation. Treat VM sizing and cloud cost as operational responsibilities.

04

The solution

Cloud provisioning through infrastructure as code, VM rightsizing and usage optimisation in IONOS, and Azure Advisor as an input to Azure cost reviews.

05

The outcome

Approximately 20% lower IONOS costs through rightsizing and usage optimisation, alongside the production migration.

06

The takeaway

A migration continues after workloads move. The operating model, resource sizing, and cost visibility need ongoing attention.

Observability

Grafana stack. From signals to operational decisions.

An observability platform I designed, built, and operate: metrics, central logging, custom collectors, and operational workflows managed as code.

40+ dashboards as code · millions of log lines a day
  • Grafana
  • Prometheus
  • Alloy
  • VictoriaLogs
Automation

Less repetition. More repeatability.

Infrastructure as code and connected workflows for provisioning, configuration, and recurring operational tasks.

~70% of provisioning automated
  • Terraform
  • Ansible
  • Azure DevOps
  • n8n
